This is the preferred way of saving the settings when you are planning to use SyncTime on a new Mac, knowing that the files synchronized by the previous Mac are up to date and the internal snapshots used by SyncTime to track the state (if any) can be automatically recreated with the first sync on the new Mac. You can read more in <a href=\"https:\/\/desairem.com\/wordpress\/synctime-export-and-import-settings\/\">Export and import settings<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do a full backup of the settings, base snapshots and logs, please continue reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to backup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Settings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The settings are saved in a JSON file at<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>~\/Library\/Group Containers\/8L4NN3ZTVN.org.desairem.SyncTime\/Library\/Application Support\/settings.json<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>where <code>~<\/code> is your user directory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip<\/strong>: you can navigate to a given file path in the Finder by selecting the main menu <em>Go To &gt; Go To Folder<\/em> or pressing <code>Command-Shift-G<\/code>, then pasting the file path and pressing Enter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Snapshots<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For some sync settings, SyncTime saves snapshots of the sync bases which allow to reliably determine which files have changed between syncs. Snapshots are created for <a data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"635\" href=\"https:\/\/desairem.com\/wordpress\/synctime-sync-types\/\">two-way<\/a> syncs or if the option to <a data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2606\" href=\"https:\/\/desairem.com\/wordpress\/synctime-track-moved-files\/\">track moved files<\/a> is enabled. Sync items that don&#8217;t include any of these options, such as standard one-way syncs, can always operate on the current state of the synced files alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Snapshots are saved in TSV files in the directory<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>~\/Library\/Group Containers\/8L4NN3ZTVN.org.desairem.SyncTime\/Library\/Application Support\/snapshots<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip<\/strong>: you can show the snapshots in the Finder by opening the File menu or main window context menu and, while pressing the Option key, selecting <em>Show Snapshot in Finder<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Activity logs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The activity logs are saved in daily TSV files in the directory<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>~\/Library\/Group Containers\/8L4NN3ZTVN.org.desairem.SyncTime\/Library\/Application Support\/activity logs<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">App preferences<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The app preferences, used to save the position and size of windows etc., are saved at (according to macOS standards)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>~\/Library\/Containers\/org.desairem.uSync\/Data\/Library\/Preferences\/org.desairem.uSync.plist<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">User scripts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you created any <a href=\"https:\/\/desairem.com\/wordpress\/synctime-action-after-all-syncs-have-completed\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"61\">custom user scripts<\/a> differing from the ones available by default in SyncTime, you may want to back them up as well. They are required by macOS to be located in a dedicated directory:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>~\/Library\/Application Scripts\/org.desairem.uSync\n<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>where <code>~<\/code> represents your home directory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating a backup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To back up the files listed above, create a sync item with <code>~\/Library<\/code> as the source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1324\" height=\"1118\" src=\"https:\/\/desairem.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/synctime-settings-backup-general.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5277\" style=\"width:662px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To exclude everything except the important files, set the Mode of the <em>All files<\/em> filter to Exclude and add <em>File or directory<\/em> filters for the other files with Mode set to Include. Please refer to <a data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"15\" href=\"https:\/\/desairem.com\/wordpress\/synctime-filter-files\/\">Filters<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1324\" height=\"1118\" src=\"https:\/\/desairem.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/synctime-settings-backup-filters.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5278\" style=\"width:662px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Restoring a backup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Copy the directories and files mentioned above from the backup location back to your Mac, replacing any existing files. After replacing the app preferences file, you need to restart your Mac or run the following Terminal command (in <code>\/Applications\/Utilities<\/code>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>defaults read org.desairem.uSync<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: manually replacing the snapshot files but importing previously exported sync items by using the Import command in SyncTime (as opposed to replacing the whole settings file) won\u2019t work, as the IDs of the imported sync items will not be the same as the ones referenced in the snapshots.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To create a copy of the settings, you can export them from the File menu or the main window context menu.
