Instead of running the whole sync again whenever one or more files are changed, SyncTime can monitor file changes in the background and sync them as the changes are detected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can enable the option <em>Keep synced in background<\/em> in the Advanced tab of the sync item settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1324\" height=\"1328\" src=\"https:\/\/desairem.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/synctime-sync-settings-advanced.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5137\" style=\"width:662px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By default, a background sync is run as soon as a file change is detected. Alternatively, you can set a delay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: after restarting the app, the main sync has to run again before monitoring for changes in the background. You can start the main sync manually by pressing the Play button beside the sync item title or by adding an automated <a href=\"https:\/\/desairem.com\/wordpress\/synctime-schedules\/\">sync schedule<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you try to quit SyncTime while some background syncs are still queued, you&#8217;ll be prompted whether you want to run the background syncs immediately, quit the app without running them, or cancel quitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: changes on a volume can only be detected when&nbsp;they are performed from the Mac on which SyncTime is running. As an alternative to background syncing, you may add a periodic <a data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1827\" href=\"https:\/\/desairem.com\/wordpress\/synctime-sync-schedules\/\">sync schedule<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">States<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When the option <em>Keep synced in background<\/em> is enabled, a sync item can be in one of 3 states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inactive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Like every other sync item, a sync can be started by pressing the Play button or by an automated <a href=\"https:\/\/desairem.com\/wordpress\/synctime-sync-schedules\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1827\">sync schedule<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1740\" height=\"514\" src=\"https:\/\/desairem.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/synctime-background-sync-stopped.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5215\" style=\"width:870px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The sync item then transitions to the <em>Main sync<\/em> state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Main sync<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The main sync is the same as for all other sync items. The Play button changes to a Pause button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1740\" height=\"514\" src=\"https:\/\/desairem.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/synctime-background-sync-running.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5213\" style=\"width:870px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When the main sync completes, the sync item transitions to the <em>Background<\/em> state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Background<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To indicate that a sync item is monitoring for changes, the Pause button changes to a Stop button and the status image changes as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1740\" height=\"514\" src=\"https:\/\/desairem.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/synctime-background-sync-active.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5214\" style=\"width:870px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When a change is detected, the sync item temporarily looks like in the <em>Main sync<\/em> state. Changes in small files usually happen so fast that they can be barely noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Changes for the main sync have to be confirmed by default, but changes detected in the background are always applied without confirmation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sync item stays in the background state indefinitely. To run the main sync again, the background sync has to be stopped by pressing the Stop button or selecting <em>Stop Background Sync<\/em> from the context menu.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By default, a sync compares the files on all bases to find any differences.
