The default Size mode is Size on Disk: each file is shown by its physical size. This means that the total size is less or equal to the disk capacity. On the other hand, changing the Size mode to Size shows each file by its virtual size: some files may have a very large virtual size but occupy much less on the physical medium, causing the total virtual size to be bigger than the disk capacity.
